Manchester City striker Harland scored seven goals in five Premier League games but missed a number of great chances against West Ham and Red Star Belgrade. City boss Pep Guardiola spoke about Harland's performance.
Guardiola said it was normal for Harland's chance conversion rate to drop. He said, "I couldn't sleep tonight. Harland had good chances to score, he could have scored 14-15 goals, but that doesn't mean he's a bad player.
"Like Harland always says, 'I can get a lot of chances.' But when there are no chances, or I don't get the ball, or I'm not in the right position, that's the problem.' It's what he mentions that needs the most attention.
"My advice is not to criticize Harland too much. You can criticize the wing-backs, the centre-backs or the manager, but never criticize the striker who scores a lot of goals because he'll score again and then you'll be in a situation where you have to apologize to him.
"It's important for him to find the (right) rhythm. We played pre-season games in Japan and Korea and didn't have much time to train. But Harland is getting better every week, he's capable of doing that and he's a huge threat on the pitch. Harland has been given a lot of chances and that shows we are playing well.
"In terms of the chances Harland gets, I think the team is playing well. When he doesn't get chances, it shows the team is having problems."
Harland's chance conversion rate has dropped dramatically from last season. In his first eight club games, he scored 12 goals from 60 percent of his chances, however, that number is down to 29 percent this season, missing nine great chances in the last two games alone.
Guardiola believes Harland needs time to adapt to the Premier League. He said, "He is a young player, he is still learning. He will get better."
City will host Nottingham Forest on Sept. 23 at 10 p.m. in the Premier League.
